THAILAND KHO CHANG 3 February 2016
Koh Chang is a beautiful island in Trat province which is approximately a 4 and half hour drive to the south from Pattaya. The easiest way to get there by car is by taking the Highway 36 towards Rayong and then picking up the Highway 3 which will take you directly into Trat. Once you arrive in Trat you would be looking for signposts to Ao Thammachart or Koh Chang Ferry Pier. The ferries run between 6.30am and 7.00pm. Minibuses are also available from many places around Bangkok and Pattaya – usually they are very reasonably priced.
Once you have arrived in Koh Chang you will obviously be looking to explore all the delights that this fantastic island has to offer. White Sand Beach is one of the most popular areas of Koh Chang and is certainly one of the most picturesque. As the name would suggest, there are long stretches of white sand and beautiful clear, blue sea waters making this the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing break. The area has a wide selection of restaurants, bars, hotels and shops offering everything that you ever wish for without being of the same level as Pattaya. Prices range from budget to the high end.
One of the first places that many people head to is the famous 15 Palms Beach Bar which is located in White Sands Beach area. 15 Palms was established in 1999 and is still run by the same original owner who continues to offer great food, cold beers and nightly beach barbeques where you can go and enjoy a romantic sunset looking out to sea. Food is served from 8am until late and free WiFi is available. 15 Palms has partner companies that can assist you with arranging other trips such as diving excursions or trips to neighbouring islands.
Another excellent place to visit on the island is Paddy’s Palms which was the island’s first Irish pub which is located just up the hill from White Sands Beach. The bar and restaurant is on 2 levels and serves an extensive food menu offering both European and Thai specialties. The bar offers draught Guinness and Kilkenny along with a wide selection of wines, spirits, beers and ciders. Live sport is shown throughout the bar and Wifi is available. The staff are friendly and attentive, the surroundings being in a typical Irish style with many of the items coming from the family pub in Kilkenny, Ireland.
